Greater Than Every False Hope - Colossians 2:6-15

Kent Keller  ·  Colossians 2:6-15  ·  Sunday, August 2, 2026

A naval commander unlocked a drawer, then a box, then a sealed envelope every single morning, just to read one line: "Port is left. Starboard is right." Decades of service, and he still needed the basics. Kent Keller opens Colossians 2:6-15 on that note — because Paul is doing the same thing for a young church being told that Jesus was a fine start but not quite enough. Paul's answer is a question about roots. "As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him." Where are you rooted, and how deeply? Because in Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him — your sins forgiven, the record of debt nailed to the cross, the powers that accused you disarmed and put to open shame. The warning follows the promise: see to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit. Every false hope makes the same offer — identity, fulfillment, security — and none of them can carry the weight. Jesus is greater than every one of them.

* PENDING — Instagram still isn't in Supermetrics, so this tile is read by hand from the IG professional dashboard. What IS measurable from our own scheduler: 11 Stories actually sent in-window, and 16 more that were staged and never approved. Prior 7 days for reference: Views 10,098 · Reach 2,497 · Interactions 387 · Link Taps 12 · Followers 1,122 — orientation only, since account-level IG figures are read by hand rather than pulled.

Supermetrics (YouTube Analytics · ChannelTotals), July 26 – Aug 1 vs July 19–25, re-pulled live 8/10. These figures are revised upward from the 8/3 publish — YouTube backfills late-attributed views for roughly a week, and this window gained 81 views (737 → 818) and 8 shares (2 → 10) after the fact. Views rebounded 169 → 818, but read the prior figure correctly: Jul 19–25 was a deliberately silent week (all eight scheduled posts were skipped because the 07-19 Shorts had gone nine days stale). So this is a return to normal, not a breakout. Retention settled at 12.4% against 13.2% — the extra backfilled views were shorter ones, which is what late-attributed traffic usually is. Subscribers are a lifetime snapshot against the last recorded 349.

⚠️ Two Shorts posted where four were scheduled. The other two were staged for Wed 7/29 and Thu 7/30 — launch day and the day after — and never left draft, so they never sent. Prior week was zero by decision (the 07-19 clips were stale). The Shorts pipeline itself is healthy; the gap is the approval step, not the renderer.

Supermetrics (GA4 property 514331806), July 26 – Aug 1 vs July 19–25, pulled live 8/3. The new christchurchmiami.org went live Wednesday 7/29, mid-window — so this is roughly half a week of the new site against a full week of the old one, and it still moved every number. Page views +76%, sessions +50%, users +23%. The one that matters most is engagement rising to 61.8% while traffic grew: bigger AND stickier, which is the combination a launch usually fails to get.

✅ No longer pending — this tile is measured for the first time since 7/12. Mailchimp still isn't authenticated in Supermetrics, but it doesn't need to be: `mailchimp_pull.py` reads the Mailchimp API directly into the CCM Sheet `mailchimp_weekly` tab on Sunday-week boundaries, so the numbers now fill themselves. Two sends went out in-window against two the week before. Reach is flat-to-slightly-up (1,304 → 1,327 recipients) on a list of 2,778, and the open rate is holding near the 50% mark that has defined this list all summer. The soft spots are clicks (39 → 33) and first-hour opens (39.4% → 40.0%, effectively flat) — people are opening reliably and clicking a little less.
📈 Sermon Views — YouTube & Subsplash (recent Sundays)

Per-sermon lifetime views by Sunday across all five surfaces — each point is one sermon (date · speaker). YouTube = views; Subsplash = plays. Lifetime totals, not weekly deltas. The gold band (0–50) is shown at 2× vertical scale so the low-volume surfaces have room for detail; above the dotted line the scale returns to normal (1:1).

† Aug 2 = live viewing only (newest sermon; on-demand views still accruing).

What Worked / What to Watch

📈 What worked

🟢 🌐 The launch moved every number that matters. Page views 492 → 865, sessions 239 → 359, users 203 → 249 — and the new site was only live for the back half of the window. A launch that grows traffic is normal. A launch that grows traffic and engagement (59.8% → 61.8%) is not; it means the people arriving are finding something worth staying for.

🟢 🇪🇸 Spanish became a full weekly deliverable, not a translation afterthought. This week shipped Spanish devotionals for all five days, a Spanish transcript, a Spanish study guide, the dubbed sermon, a Spanish podcast episode, and Spanish versions of all three blogs — same week, not trailing. The blog corpus is now at exact parity, 84 English and 84 Spanish.

🟢 📺 YouTube came back to life. Views 169 → 818 after a week that was intentionally dark, and shares 3 → 10 — the sharpest sharing week of the summer, which is the metric that actually reflects people passing the sermon on. Retention came in at 12.4%, a little below the prior week's 13.2%; the honest read is that the recovered views skew shorter, not that the watching got worse.

🟢 ✉️ Email is measurable again. The Mailchimp tile has been dark since 7/12 for want of a Supermetrics connection. It turns out it never needed one — `mailchimp_pull.py` reads the API straight into the CCM Sheet, and the tile now fills itself every week. Two sends, 1,327 recipients, a 50.3% open rate and 40% of opens inside the first hour. One fewer open item every Monday from here on.

🟢 🧱 Every published URL resolves. The week ends with 29 of 29 live — both sermon hubs, all six tabs, four videos, six images, four podcast feeds and both social drops — verified rather than assumed.

🤔 What to watch

🔴 ⚠️ Nineteen of thirty launch-week posts never sent. They were staged, rendered and correct — and then left in `draft`, which is inert. Among the casualties: "The doors are open" (the actual launch announcement), the what's-new carousel, the podcast tease, the Spanish "Todo, en español" tile, and two YouTube Shorts on launch day itself. The website launch succeeded despite its announcement campaign. This is the single most fixable thing on this page: `draft` is not a parking place, and nothing moves out of it without `preflight_social.py --approve`.

🟡 📱 Instagram is the last hand-read channel. Email closed this week, which leaves Instagram as the only tile on this page without an automated source. Account-level Views, Reach and Interactions still have to be copied out of the IG professional dashboard by hand, so they lag and they're easy to skip. Everything we schedule to Instagram is measured precisely; what Instagram reports back is not.

🟡 🔗 Email clicks are drifting down while opens hold. 39 → 33 clicks on slightly more recipients, and the same pattern the week before. Opens near 50% say the list still trusts the sender; the click rate at 1.4% says whatever we're asking them to do next isn't landing. Worth a look at what the calls-to-action actually are before it becomes a trend.

🟡 ▶️ The English sermon video is still untrimmed. It is publishing as the full 1:37:25 broadcast when the message itself is 32:53, which also means the ten chapters in its description are pointing into the pre-service block. A two-minute fix in Studio, but it is live and public right now.

Note from Jeff

The new site launched Wednesday and the numbers did what we hoped. Page views up 76%, sessions up 50%, and — the part I care about most — engagement went up rather than down as traffic grew. Launches usually buy you a spike of curious clicks that bounce. This one brought people who stayed.

I want to be straight about the other half. We built a full announcement campaign for launch week and most of it never went out. Nineteen posts, including the actual "the doors are open" announcement and two Shorts on launch day, sat in draft and expired there. Nothing was broken — the graphics were rendered, the links were good, the schedule was right. They simply never got approved, and an unapproved post is a post that does not exist. The site launch worked without them, which is a nice problem, but I would rather not repeat the experiment.

The Spanish side is the quiet win. This is the first week Spanish devotionals ran as a standing deliverable rather than a one-off, and the blog corpus is now at exact parity — 84 posts in each language. Spanish sermon, transcript, study guide, podcast episode and all three blog translations shipped the same week as English rather than trailing it.

Two things still open on my desk: trimming the English sermon video, which will also straighten out its chapter markers, and the AI-disclosure toggle on the Spanish dub. — Jeff

  • ▶️ English sermon video untrimmed — live at 1:37:25 against a 32:53 message; its 10 description chapters are misaligned until it's trimmed. Studio-only.
  • 🇪🇸 Spanish dub AI-disclosure toggle — Studio-only, no Data API field. The video is public; the disclosure is not yet set.
