Teaching Pastor Kent Keller  ·  Colossians 1:15-23  ·  Sunday, July 19, 2026

Week 2 of GREATER THAN, our study through Colossians. Pastor Kent Keller opens with Coco the gorilla, who — having no vocabulary for an earthquake — signed “darn floor, bad bite.” We are not much better off, he says, when we try to describe who Jesus is. So Paul reaches for the words of an early Christian hymn, and it rises in four movements. The Manifestation of His Glory: Jesus is “the image of the invisible God” — the Greek word is icon, an exact representation. People wondered for centuries what God is like; God’s answer was, look at Jesus. “Firstborn” means first in honor, not first in time — He is uncreated, the agent of creation, one person with two natures, as Chalcedon put it in 451, “without mixture, confusion, separation, or division.” The Magnitude of His Reign: every throne, dominion, ruler and authority was created through Him and for Him. Angels are real, but secondary — don’t fixate on second things. As Abraham Kuyper said, “there is not one molecule in the universe over which Jesus does not cry, ‘Mine.’” The Majesty of His Lordship: “in him all things hold together” — the unity in a diverse universe springs from the mind of the Son of God. And then the hymn lands somewhere stunning — the Magnificence of His Sacrifice: those once alienated and hostile have been reconciled by His death. The One who breathed the world into existence one day also breathed His last on a Roman cross, so that we might be saved. Come to Him broken, crushed, guilty, ashamed — any way at all, except dishonestly. His grace is greater than your sin.

Supermetrics (YouTube Analytics · ChannelTotals), July 12–18 vs July 5–11, pulled 8/3. A hard drop — views 1,454 → 173, avg-view% 12.2% → 6.3%. The Shorts card below explains it: nothing new posted all week. Shares actually rose 1 → 4, so the small audience that did watch was more inclined to pass it on.

🔴 Zero Shorts posted against four scheduled. All four rows sat in `scheduled` status, which nothing dispatches — the cron only picks up `approved` and `pending_approval`. The clips were cut, branded and staged correctly; they simply were never moved into a state that sends. This is the first week of a three-week pattern that ends with 19 unsent posts on launch week.

Supermetrics (GA4 property 514331806), July 12–18 vs July 5–11, pulled 8/3. The prior-window figures reconcile exactly with the 7/12 report. More people arrived (users 258 → 274, sessions 331 → 352) but did less once they were here — page views fell 669 → 589 and engagement dropped to 56.5% from a strong 65.0%. Wider top of funnel, shallower visit.

📈 Sermon Views — YouTube & Subsplash (recent Sundays)

Per-sermon lifetime views by Sunday across all five surfaces — each point is one sermon (date · speaker). YouTube = views; Subsplash = plays. Lifetime totals, not weekly deltas. The gold band (0–50) is shown at 2× vertical scale so the low-volume surfaces have room for detail; above the dotted line the scale returns to normal (1:1).

What Worked / What to Watch

📈 What worked

🟢 🌐 More people found the site. Users rose 258 → 274 and sessions 331 → 352 in a mid-July week with no launch, no campaign and no Shorts working for us. That is organic and steady.

🟢 🔁 The people who did watch, shared. YouTube shares went 1 → 4 on a fraction of the traffic — the highest share-per-view week in the recent run.

🟢 📱 Fourteen Stories went out. Instagram kept a daily presence through the week even while the Shorts pipeline stalled.

🟢 🇪🇸 Spanish stayed same-day. Sermon, page and study guide continued to publish alongside English.

🤔 What to watch

🔴 ⚡ Four Shorts scheduled, zero posted. Every one sat in `scheduled` status, which nothing dispatches — the cron only claims `approved` and `pending_approval`. Nine Instagram Stories were stranded the same way. The content was correct and staged; the state was wrong, and nothing surfaced that until the views fell.

🟡 📉 Engagement fell nearly nine points. 65.0% → 56.5% while sessions rose. More arrivals, less depth — worth watching whether that is a mid-summer pattern or the start of one.

🟡 ✉️ Mailchimp and Instagram remain hand-read. Neither is an authenticated Supermetrics source here, so email and account-level IG can't be measured automatically.

Note from Jeff

A quiet week that is more instructive in hindsight than it was at the time. The website actually did fine — more people, more sessions — but they didn't go as deep, and engagement came off its high.

The thing worth naming is YouTube. Views fell from about 1,450 to 173, and the reason isn't the audience. All four Shorts for the week were cut, branded and staged, and then sat in a status that nothing sends from. They never posted. The channel went a full week with nothing new, and the numbers did exactly what you would expect.

That is a fixable class of problem, and it is the same one that shows up the next two weeks running. — Jeff
